Bike Riding Mishap

How do you know if you're cut out to be a bike rider or not?? I'm not exactly sure...but I am sure that if you go to stop suddenly and only hit your front brakes...you're not meant to be one.

Jessie and I have taken to bike riding for exercise lately, but Jessie wasn't able to go tonight. So instead, Mom and I went. We were having a great time, buzzing along; sun was going down so it wasn't too hot.... But as we turned onto the main road to head home, we had to slow down to let a car turn.

And tragedy struck.

I hardly ever ride a bike - I much prefer a good walk/jog to a bike ride. As a result of that, I am not comfortable on a bike and don't really know how to work one.

Sooooo I went to slow down and only squeezed with my left hand.

I've ridden a bucking horse and stayed on just fine, but I couldn't handle that bucking bike.

Right over the handlebars onto the pavement I flew. And all right in the headlights of the turning car. Ouch. Ouch to my body and ouch to my dignity.

I moaned and groaned my way home, my whole body covered in bruises and scrapes. My elbow is bloody, my knees are bruised, my hands are jarred.

Found out that basketball shorts don't hold their own against pavement very well.......

I'm just glad my face is okay!!!

  1. AH Lisa! You are now an official member of the Over The Handlebar Club! Welcome to the battered club of people who either A. are bad at riding bikes or B. are those prone to hurt themselves no matter what they are on, or C. are those who are none of the above and were merely destined to take a flying leap into space, only to return to earth with little dignity and skin on elbows and knees left.
I, of course, am a long time and twice awarded member.
The more you go over, the more awards you get. Needless to say, the people with the most feathers in this hat don't live very long........
So all in all, welcome to our humble (very humble) group of battered humanity.

Glad you are ok though, I know exactly what you are going through.

  2. Oh, my goodness! I'm so sorry you hurt yourself! That sounds so painful.
You made me laugh though, reading your account of the tale ;) "..I couldn't handle that bucking bike." :D

I haven't fallen off a bike in a long time... though I haven't ridden a bike in a very long time, but I do know what it's like to fall flat on one's face ;)
I have slipped in the rain, fallen and skinned my knee; Tripped on my own self and slipped down a flight of stairs (in a skirt) in front of several people I had just met; And once while putting groceries away in the cupboard bashed my head into one of the very doors above me that I had opened only a few minutes before.
I said all that to hopefully make you feel a little less silly about flying off your bike :)

I hope you are all better soon <3

  3. OUCH! I have never actually been over the handle bars of a bike, but I figure that hurts about as bad as other headlong falls I've taken. Good to see you kept your sense of humor ;)

  4. I cringed just reading it! I've done that before on a bike, so I can empathize with your pain. (can I join the Over the Handlebar Club?) When I was trail riding with three of my brothers, Nathan was coming off of a log bike bridge, and went straight over, and the bike landed upside down. It was pretty comical (don't worry, it was dirt, so we could laugh)!!
    Get better soon!

    1. Oh most definitely. Welcome Paul, to the OHC.
Actually, I was just thinkin - I'm a three time awarded member. I forgot the time I came around a corner and wiped out full flat and my cousin ran over my face with his bike. I didn't go *exactly* over the bars, but it sure was close.

    2. Perhaps than we will consider you a member with extra achievements. ;)

  5. Oh Lisa....so sorry. We will pray that you get better soon. As all the stories above go....it seems as if we have all been there. Ask David if he remembers Justin's? I am so thankful to the Lord that He did not allow you to flip over in front of that car! Your Mom must have been concerned! Well, a few days of a little rest might be just what the Dr. ordered :D

  6. Welcome to the OHC, Lisa. I have been over the handle bars many times, as well as over side ways, lol. Hope you are feeling better soon.

  7. Ouch, Glad you are okay though! Lol, well I think I am a 2 or 3 times awarded member. I have had way to many OH moments for my liking. The other day I almost did it on my normal ride.

  8. That sounds painful! I have never gone over the handle bars because I have been warned by my brothers of that, so I am always careful to pull both brakes at the same time (I can never remember which one is the one that might make me fly over, that is why I always pull both.) ! To be honest, I really dislike riding bikes, but every once in awhile I take a bumpy ride through our woods.

  9. Thanks so much for the get well wishes, everyone!! My legs are bruised all the way up and down, and I'm walking like an oolllddd lady....it's a little annoying, but it'll pass. It's comforting to know I'm not the only one who's done this, though :)

Jessie looked at me yesterday morning and said, "Wow...I can't believe I have such a klutz for a sister." So sympathetic..... LOL
